We didn’t think there was even the slightest chance that Greg Glassman, the founder and 100% owner of CrossFit, would sell the business. He had declined many very generous offers before now and seemed quite proud of the fact he could not be “bought.” However, as things unfolded over the past few weeks, it seemed to us that this was the only way that CrossFit was going to be saved. One by one, we saw new affiliates withdraw their affiliation to CrossFit, members of the “inner circle” denounce it, and professional athletes withdraw their participation in the CrossFit Games until ownership changed hands. Coal Creek/Impact was just one voice of dissent, but when we all came together, it became a chorus that was too loud and too big to be ignored.
We are excited to share that Greg Glassman sold CrossFit to Eric Roza, an affiliate owner in Boulder, CO and a very highly regarded former CEO of Datalogix. Yesterday, we had a chance to chat with Pat Burke, who coached Eric as he started with CrossFit and initially helped him start his gym in Boulder. We also had a chance to chat with a former employee of Datalogix. We then stopped by to chat with his General Manager of CrossFit Sanitas to learn more about the owner. All three of them had nothing but positive things to say about his character, and that they had no doubt that he would build a strong, cohesive, and positive work culture as he had done with every company he has led.
We believe this change at the top is exactly what CrossFit needed. It’s time for the next phase of CrossFit to be led by a seasoned CEO who has the character, integrity, and vision to develop CrossFit into its full potential. We can’t wait to see what happens.
So, what does that mean for us? Well, we are what we always have been: Coal Creek. We will retain our affiliation for as long as we are certain it serves this community, our mission, and our people. Now it is a name that also is in alignment with our values. We know it has been a bit of a bumpy ride the past few months. We admire how this community rallied together in so many ways for so many good causes.
From Eric Roza in his message to the CrossFit Community:
“As a box owner and athlete, I’ve experienced CrossFit’s transformative power and the shared bond it creates between people of different races, genders, ages, ethnicities, incomes, educations and physical abilities. That magic, created by our affiliate owners, coaches, and athletes in 158 countries around the world, is real. And I believe it makes the world a better place.”
"The goal is just to get fit, make it the best hour of your day, stay safe, turn up the music, high five some people, and blow off some steam. So remember that. Relax. Have fun. Work out."
